Water will sit in the cracks and the cycle of freezing and thawing will cause them to get deeper and wider. Eventually water will be able to enter the interior of the chimney between the flue and the outer walls. This water will then damage the inside of the chimney and cause costly damage to the surrounding walls and ceilings in the house.
A fireplace chimney liner is your first line of defense against a chimney fire. It is a protective fireproof material within the chimney flue (the passageway for the smoke and fumes) that keeps the heat and smoke within the flue and prevents the spread of fire in the case of a chimney fire. The National Fire Protection Association standards (which building codes are based upon) requires that all masonry chimneys have a lining that would be the equivalent protection of 5/8 thick fireclay.Prior to the mid 1930s, most homes in the Denver area didn't have any real flue lining.
A furnace/boiler chimney liner is your first line of defense against poisonous fumes and destructive gasses. It is a protective material within the chimney flue (the passageway for the smoke and fumes) that works to ensure that the exhaust gasses cannot escape from the chimney and into the home. The liner also protects the masonry chimney from damage caused by these gasses.
A damper is basically a door that is used to open and close the flue to let the smoke out when you're using the fireplace and prevent cold air from entering the house when you're not having a fire. A broken or inefficient damper will cause your house to feel cold and drafty and cost much more to heat.

Completely byzantine and asinine business rules. They set a time, which we were home for, and I never saw them. When I inquired why they didn't come, they said they did and the gate was locked. I told them we don't leave the gate open for security reasons, I was right there inside, all they had to do was call me and let me know they were outside. I was told they don't call. Apparently, that's too much to ask of them. Half of Denver has gates on the alleyway or yard entrances, so they just give up and won't even bother calling to let someone know they've arrived? Ludicrous and absurd.

I don't know how I could have been any happier with Chimney Jack. I got a prompt response to my request for an estimate to repair my crumbling chimney and to replace mortar in a few places on the side of the 1947 brick house. Tracy, the owner, personally visited to inspect the needed work and gave me an estimate and schedule and stuck to it. The workers were extremely polite and efficient and finished the work a little ahead of schedule.
The mortar is holding well three months later. The invoice matched the estimate exactly, and communications with the home office was essentially effortless as well. I highly recommend Chimney Jack.

Really awful company. They've left trash on my doorstep almost once a month regardless of the no soliciting signs. Also whoever is delivering the pieces of trash to our doorstep appears to be scoping out our house. Looking in windows, looking directly at the cameras and then leaving. Very suspect and would never do business with a company like this.

First learned about them from a flyer on our Park Hill door and glad we did! Amazing craftsmanship! Hired them to repoint several places in our 1940 home and then ended up hiring them to build three new brick pillars on our flat porch - and it all matched perfectly! Fast, efficient work at a great quote - highly recommend!

They repointed my first house and I liked them enough to use them a second time for the interior of my new house. I was trying to remodel before moving in. They were busy and scheduled my work a month out. I called the Friday before to confirm they would be there Monday. They never called back. I called Monday morning and they told me that they wouldn't be able to get to me until the following week. Really unprofessional considering the floors were getting refinished that Wednesday and I was going to move in that Friday. I planned remodel around them.

I was recommended this company by a trusted source, but unfortunately experienced such horribly bad customer service and such a long wait for service times (over two months), that I switched to EcoClean, who offer real customer service, timely service and great work done at a fair market price. If I were again looking for a chimney service company, I would not go with Chimney Jack, the person who manages clients and who answers the phones needs some serious customer training.
I hate writing horrible reviews and try to avoid it, but this experience I felt merited warning others. With other solid professional companies out there who are eager to work with customers, I would recommend EcoClean all the way!

I had a great experience with Chimney Jack and now I can finally feel safe using my fireplace. The existing brick was in pretty bad shape and there was no damper or cap on the chimney, which let cold air and rain/snow into the fireplace. Chimney Jack came out for the estimate quickly and gave me a quote. They repaired the fire box, installed a new metal flu liner with a cap that can be opened and closed with the pull of a cord. The chimney pulls great, no smoke in the house and finally no rain or snow coming down the chimney either. Thanks for the great service!

This place is bizarre. I called in early August after I moved into an older home with 2 fireplaces that hadn't been used in years. I was told that they did not schedule chimney cleaning until after Labor Day and to call back or be put on the list to schedule. I suggested the owner might like to take advantage of the slow time to checkout the fireplaces in case work needed to be done. Not receptive- so I asked to be put on the list. Just called to see where I am on the list.not on it! Guess they don't need the work.

They scheduled me early a month out, gave me an exact date, and time. I call this morning because nobody showed up as promised. The response was, "we can't get there this week, that date we gave you was just an approximate." Totally unreliable, totally unprofessional, they wasted 4 weeks of my time and this repair is a sale contingency. Do NOT waste your time with this group.

My experience was great, and we actually owe Tracy a debt of gratitude. We knew the home inspector we had hired when we bought this place was bad, but we didn't realize how bad until Tracy came out to take a look at our chimney. He pointed out some really unsafe conditions that our "inspector" totally overlooked. Thank goodness for carbon monoxide detectors.
When we accepted Chimney Jack's bid to do some chimney/mortar repairs, they let us know they were scheduling about a month out and would let us know when the time got closer when they could come. They called a few days in advance to let me know when they were coming, arrived on time, and were super courteous (even declined to park on my driveway after I said they could--because they said the truck leaked oil). Scored points right there.
They worked in super windy and less than ideal conditions and maintained a good attitude the whole time. They cleaned up before they left, and I was happy with the end result: my scary looking basement is a bit less scary looking now, and our chimney seems less likely to blow over in the wind. They also charged a more than fair price, so I can only say that I have no complaints and would definitely recommend them.

We recently moved into an old home with a wood burning fireplace. We called Chimney Jack and scheduled an inspection and chimney sweep prior to use. The gentleman arrived promptly and did a thorough inspection and taught us about safe fireplace use. We couldn't have received a more courteous, honest evaluation. Definitely recommend this company.

I scheduled an estimate a couple weeks in advance, took time off work to meet the technician, and then waited. And waited. Nobody showed up. They had confirmed the appointment with a follow up call, and as I sat there for a couple hours, I called them twice, with no response. Still haven't heard anything. Truly disappointing and a disrespectful waste of my time.

Quote was free of charge and completed promptly. Work was completed about a month later as promised for the quoted amount. The company called a week in advance to schedule and showed up on time. We recently moved into a 1920s home and were not sure about the condition of the fireplace. Chimney Jack was able to restore it (swept and inspected, repaired mortar and crown, and removed old damper and installed a new one). David completed the work in a day and did a great job!

I asked for chimney jack to come and do an estimate on the new house my wife and I bought. It was built in 1956 and then was foreclosed on, we had no idea what state the firebox and fireplace would be in. When Tracy showed up he was not only to the minute on time but was very kind and courteous. He looked around for a little bit then got on the roof to look down the chimney.
He came back and said everything looked pretty good. He suggested down the road replacing some mortar joints in the firebox but even told me how to do it if I wanted to save the money. He even fixed our damper that came off the hinges for free! I felt that he was very honest and not trying to sell me at all. Any future fireplace work that we need done I will be going with them without a doubt! I tested my fireplace after he left and now have a beautiful fire! Thanks Tracey and chimney jack!

I've hired plenty of contractors for small jobs on my house and it's always the same - one guy comes out to do the estimate, who seems good. Then the guys that show up to do the actual work are one step away from a guy you'd hire off a street corner. No different here with Chimney Jack. I hired them to repair my chimney. Not the most difficult job in the world.
They fixed the chimney - no complaints about that. But in the process they left my hose on all day long directly next to the foundation, flooding my basement with about 2 inches of water. They were so clueless that when I went down there, they thought I had a broken pipe. I'm like, uh, no you left the hose on for 8 hours. Additionally, they dropped some sort of powder on my front sidewalk, permanently staining it.
They also leaned a ladder against my gutter and bent it so that it leaks water, which cause paint on the supporting wood to peel. Worst of all is that they dumped debris down the chimney as they were building the chimney, that blocked exhaust (including carbon monoxide) from the heater. This caused a buildup of condensation to flood the heater, so that the next time I turned it on it was broken, filled with water.
They ruined my heater, and I had to pay $2,000 to have it replaced. So ya, I would not hire them to do work for you. UPDATE: This is an update, posted after Tracy's reply. Actually Tracy, that is patently false. You came to my property and inspected the destroyed heater. I provided you photographs of the clogged pipes. You argued with me and claimed the damage was probably, or could have already existed.
The price of a new heater to me was $2,000. You offered me $500 and I told you no. I then counter-offered to take $1,300 to forego a lawsuit to recover the full amount. You accepted that, but said it would take 90 days for payment. I said OK. Ninety days came and went, and nothing. I emailed you, and it took another 3 weeks for payment. I would be happy to post pictures of the damaged heater, clogged pipes, damaged cement, settlement letter, and accompanying emails, if you don't remember any of this.

I picked Chimney Jack from reading reviews on Yelp. I asked for a Saturday appointment after calling on a Wednesday and they originally said that they were booked but then they told us that they could squeeze us in at the end of the day at 4:30. A contractor from their company came as scheduled and after inspection stated that our chimney did not require cleaning as it was not required at this time.
I know there are a lot of shady chimney sweep companies out there that try to sell you more things than you need or do a cleaning that is needed but this is not one of those companies. I was skeptical about hiring one of these companies especially after watching the Today show special on these types of companies. I feel this is a shame since there are actual reputable companies in this line of work out there especially Chimney Jack. I will definitely be referring these guys to anyone that needs a Chimney Sweep to call Chimney Jack

We hired Chimney Jack to do a sweep of our chimney that has a wood stove insert & chimney pipe. Our sweep was just a sweep, I think I was expecting more of an inspection of the chimney as well, but I must've not asked for that type of service. Nobody got on the top of my chimney to check the brick work or to make sure that everything was in place where the steel pipe goes up, etc.
The fellow who showed up was courteous, answered our questions and admitted when he wasn't sure of the answer to our questions (which we appreciated) and he was clean & left our house in good condition. Our chimney sweep consisted of him running some brushes up the pipe to clean off the debris. The job took about 15 minutes and $100 later our chimney pipe was much cleaner. If you want more of an inspection - be sure to ask for more than a chimney sweep.
